Bio: Watching The Sir Walrus Band perform is sheer testimony to the fact that South Africa can, and does produce quality musicians. The Sir Walrus Band is a new groove-based, electric four-piece instrumental outfit and one of South Africa’s most exciting young Jazz-fusion bands. Previously known as “Juice”, Sir Walrus was hailed from the start for performing catchy music not very often associated with its generation, nor with current trends and the popular perception of Jazz and Blues The Band has opened for Terrence Reis, new front man for internationally acclaimed band Dire Straits’ reunion “The Straits”, as well as for Mageshen Naidoo at the Ballito Prawn and Jazz Festival, the Durban International Blues Festival, the North Coast Festival alongside Just Jinjer and Goodluck, and numerous Durban musical showcases. Live performances see guitarist Sebastian Goldswain and sax player Jonathan Judge (two of the top young musicians in the country at their respective instruments) constantly trying to outplay each other in a cheeky, technical way, while accompanied by the effortless rhythm section of Brian Stone on drums and Ruben Thomas on bass. Musically, The Sir Walrus Band is known for writing catchy melodies that genuinely stick with the listener, before diving head-on into improvisation and musical exploration, as well as for superb, tight performances. The Sir Walrus Band sits comfortably in the swing, groove, funk and rock spectrums and writes interesting, complex and contrasting fusion pieces as well as re-arranges covers to the point of bare recognition. The Sir Walrus Band prides itself on having an unusual musical balance that could see the band perform the same set in front of Rock, Blues and Jazz audiences and remain tasteful to them all. Currently recording their debut album at LYD Productions with SAMA-nominated producer and bass player, Ruben Thomas, The Sir Walrus Band is ready to pull the youth, entertain the festival-goers, crack the radio playlists and most importantly, raise the eyebrows of hardened experts and musicians the band members are constantly worshipping and learning from. The band's influences extend broadly from The Dixie Dregs, Greg Howe and Jimi Hendrix through to Return To forever, John Coltrane and The Nils Landgren Funk Unit.
“The Sir Walrus Band is the most exciting bunch of muso’s to emerge on the Durban landscape recently, holding the entire audience spellbound with their expertise mixed liberally with their obvious enjoyment of being a well-rehearsed machine. Their performance is world-class and totally infectious”
– Steve Fataar (ex. Flames/ Beach Boys)
